The Ebon Vanguard
In lots of Ascalon quests Duke Barradin's group of soldiers is referred to as the Vanguard. I'm presuming the Ebon Vanguard are human soldiers from ascalon (from what I've seen) so do you think they are one and the same?
It would be nice to have all the old Ascalons involved in the plot again, I for one really like some of the Ascalon Leader's armor.
Alternatively, Duke B's vanguard wears red cloaks so perhaps they are the Crimson Vanguard and the Ebon Vanguard are a different detachment of the Ascalon forces that were sent into Charr lands and were cut off from their route home.

It will be good to return to Ascalon, and see what has happened. I wonder if we will see any other people from pre searing besides Gwen in Eye of the North.

Duke Barradin was next in line to Ascalon's throne. Now that "SPOILERS" Rurik is dead and his father isn't likely to have another child there is no heir to the Ascalonian throne... Or is there.
A lot of NPCs in the desolation say they are waiting for the arrival of another true blooded heir. They arn't refering to the Ossa line, but rather the line of primeaval kings ending in Ruriks father.
In GW:EN we join up with the Ebon Vanguard, resistance fighters trapped behind ascalon's wall. Fighting among them is the other true blooded heir to the primeaval kings, Gwen. She doesn't know it when you join her but as the last true blooded heir she will aid you in defeating the Destroyers.

From what I saw of the GW:EN trailer, there were a bunch of Ascalonian soldiers near the end. They wore black.
Black = Ebon = different than the red wearing soldiers in Prophecies?

I don't think it's anything that interesting. According to the official wiki, they are just Ascalon Soldiers trapped behind enemy lines.

Greensuitjacket: would mind mentioning when you're going to potentially spoiler something? I'm not say whetehr or not you did or didn't, but it's generally a polite thing to do.

Maybe thier a "rogue" group of soldiers that left, following the footsteps of Rurik and the group of brave heros(thats us!). King Adelbern wanted to stay and fight the Charr, but Rurik wanted to lead the Ascalons away from Ascalon. Many of the men under Adelberns command would probably feel that they would be wasting their lives by throwing themselves at the numerically superior Charr. Maybe this Captain Langmahr that Gwen mentions lead a small rebellion and took control of a detachment of Ascalon soldiers, did away with their red capes and made them don black ones, named them the Ebon Vanguard and engaged in guerilla warfare up north.

THe Ebon vanguard I believe is a elite soldier group, that was on a mission to flank the charr. Then the searing happened, and the charr came up behind them, and they are fighting with the charr still.

SPOILER?
About Gwen's father: "My daddy was a great warrior, but he died when I was seven. Mommy says maybe we'll see him again after we die. Do you think that's true?"

Wait a second - Duke Barradin was next in line for the throne? Wouldn't that mean he would have to be closely related to the king - most likely a brother? And yet his daughter, Lady Althea, was going to marry Prince Rurik...who would then probably be her first cousin? Ewww.

There's a lot of inbreeding when it comes to royal lines and in "elite" wealthy families. Maybe not as close as that, but still a lot of it. Even FDR married his cousin.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Duke Barradin is of no relation to King Adelbern.
If I remember correctly, Barradin is part of the old nobility of Ascalon.
Adelbern is actually a warrior king who got elected to become king after the Guild Wars.

Just finished Thunderhead Keep and got a gold one out of one of the chests there....this was in normal mode (working on protector)
but yeah...they drop pretty much everywhere in high level areas...might get lucky if you hit hard mode and pop a few chests with lockpicks
